Be Chill
Unfortunately, dental anxiety prevents many people from getting the care they need, even though poor oral hygiene has far-reaching consequences that extend beyond the quality and appearance of your teeth and gums to your overall physical well-being. Periodontal disease and other dental issues have been linked to a high chance of developing cardiovascular disease. Mikhail Gankin, DMD, provides oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide for his Port St. Lucie patients who need it to get them through their visits. This sedative, taken orally about an hour before your visit, significantly reduces your anxiety while letting you stay awake for therapy. Contact our Port St. Lucie office immediately if you think this would be the best course of action. We're pleased to offer oral conscious sedation, a tried-and-true technique for putting patients at ease throughout procedures
Lay Back and Relax
Oral conscious sedation helps make specific procedures less scary, uncomfortable, and painful. Conscious sedation is often used in dentistry for people who feel anxious or panicked during complicated procedures like fillings, root canals, or regular cleanings. It is also often used to help patients relax and feel less pain during endoscopies and minor surgeries. Professionals in the medical field now call conscious sedation "procedural sedation and analgesia." In the past, it was known as sleep dentistry, twilight sleep, happy gas, and laughing gas.
Leave the anxiety at the door
Oral sedation is a good choice because it helps the patient and the dentist in many ways. Some people may not take good care of their teeth because they are afraid of going to the dentist. People can feel calm and at ease during their procedure with the help of oral sedation.
Oral sedation is safe, easy to give to adults and children, and doesn't involve needles. Another benefit is the amnesia effect, which means that the patient won't remember much or anything about the procedure, even though they are awake and can follow instructions.
Comfort is a top priority
Dr. Gankin makes your comfort a priority before beginning any procedure. During your initial appointment, Dr. Gankin will ask if you are anxious or would like some sedative to make your oral surgery as smooth as possible.
No Need to be Nervous
Depending on what you've done, the conscious sedation steps may differ. For a general procedure that uses conscious sedation, you can usually expect the following:
You'll get a sedative by taking a pill or through a mask that lets you breathe in the sedative. Then, you'll wait until the drug calms you down. You might have to wait up to an hour to feel the effects. Most sedatives taken by mouth take 30 to 60 minutes to work. Your doctor monitors how you breathe and how high your blood pressure is. Once the sedative starts to work, Dr. Gankin will start the procedure.
Safe and Effective
It doesn't take long to wake up from oral conscious sedation. You may have to stay for up to an hour or even longer. We will monitor your heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure until they are back to normal. Bring a friend or family member who can drive you home or pick you up. Side effects may last for the rest of the day. These include feeling groggy, headaches, and nauseous. Take a day off work and only do something strenuous once the side effects disappear. This is especially important if you want to do precise work by hand or operate heavy machinery.
With sedation dentistry, you can feel calm, at ease, and relaxed during dental work. It's a moderate level of sedation, which means you're technically still awake but feel very comfortable.
In most cases, oral conscious sedation is covered by insurance. Out-of-pocket costs will vary from plan to plan.
Teeth problems only persist and get more painful without proper treatment. Sometimes it takes a specialist like Mikhail Gankin, DMD, to provide that relief. Dr. Gankin works in tandem with referring dentists and oral surgeons to ensure that patients get the best care in as few visits as possible. His goal is pain relief. Whether it’s a patient's teeth, insurance, or anything else that makes it difficult to get care, he will work diligently to help restore healthy smiles.
